On 26 April 1986 there was an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine (part of the Soviet Union). After a sudden power output surge and the failure of an attempt at an emergency shutdown one of the reactors ruptured and exploded. The resulting fire and smoke spread radioactive fallout over a wide area. Although the number of recorded deaths was small (about 30), the nearby town of Pripyat and other areas had to be evacuated — over 330,000 people were resettled. Wide areas of Ukraine (and the rest of the Soviet Union) were contaminated. The accident also highlighted the dangers of nuclear energy.
