The Second World War

SOURCE A Adolf Hitler

1 Look at Source A. Do you think it is fair to blame Hitler for the start of the Second World War?

The Second World War was the most devastating conflict in human history. Over 50 million people lost their lives in a series of wars as expansionist regimes in Japan, Italy and Germany strove to create a new world order. Large areas of Europe and Asia were destroyed and new weapons were unleashed. Getting to grips with the complex causes and events of the conflict is a difficult task, but there are plenty of resources on the internet to help you do so. A good place to start is the BBC website and its timeline at www.bbc. co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/ww2_summary_01/shtml.
