Of all the concentration camps where the appalling crimes of the Holocaust took place, the most notorious was near a town in Poland called O świȩcim, better known by its German name — Auschwitz. This article does not attempt to tell the full story of the camp (or rather camps, for there were two — the first, originally a Polish army barracks, and the later purpose-built one, known as Auschwitz-Birkenau). Instead, it looks at two of the victims who were brought to Auschwitz by the Nazis and considers why the Holocaust continues to be important in the twenty-first century.
