The Cuban missile crisis

Students are generally very ready to narrate the events of the Cuban missile crisis and many can discuss the causes of the crisis effectively. However, the most able students should be able to discuss the impact of the crisis on the relations between the superpowers, understand its importance for Kennedy and Khrushchev’s power bases and explain its impact on subsequent policies and events.

Kennedy and Khrushchev were both able to claim credit for their wise and statesman-like actions in choosing not to embark on MAD (mutually assured destruction).
