The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 triggered widespread international condemnation. US President Jimmy Carter responded with a package of measures that included suspending grain sales to the USSR and abandoning an arms limitation treaty. He also withdrew the US team from the Moscow Olympics. Other countries soon joined the boycott (Japan, West Germany, China, the Philippines and many Muslim countries), while some supported the boycott but allowed their athletes to compete if they wanted to.
