MAKING THE GRADE: NEA IDEA

Rainfall

In this issue’s ‘Everybody’s talking about’ column, Simon Oakes discusses the causes of UK rainfall and the impacts of climate change. Rainfall is a fundamental driver in the water cycle, influencing everything from flood risk to food security and so it is an interesting topic for an NEA.

Simon’s article focuses on change over time and to look at this, long-term data are essential. There is a good network of rain gauges measuring rainfall across the UK. Long-term quality-controlled data collated by the Met Office can be found at www.tinyurl.com/msxb7ewj.
