This update looks at the core topic of migration. Through studying A-level geography, students are meant to engage with the key issues facing the world today. However, the current courses were written nearly 10 years ago and pre-date important changes in global migration patterns and trends. Notably, the UK’s exit from the European Union has impacted migration flows linking the UK with its continental neighbours. Further afield, the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan have displaced many millions of people. Between 2020 and 2022, the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted global migration and flows of remittances on an unprecedented scale.

This topic update provides analysis and assessment of these and other contemporary migration issues in ways that align with the ‘Global systems’ content of the A-level specifications and their assessments.
