Canadian wildfire air pollution in New York

In early June 2023, more than 100 wildfires raged across Canada. Smoke drifted south to affect the air quality in more than a dozen US states, putting over 50 million people under air-quality alerts.

The USA experienced its worst toxic air pollution from wildfire smoke in recent recorded history. On 7 June, New York City and Detroit were listed among the five most polluted cities in the world. The sky in Manhattan turned orange as New Yorkers were exposed to pollution levels that exceeded the national air quality standard by a factor of five.
