NEW HORIZONS: GEOGRAPHY WORKS

Water resources consultant

I work as a senior water resources consultant with many of the water companies in the UK. I develop water resources management and drought plans.

Plans dealing with water resources management are submitted by water companies to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) every 5 years. They detail the quantity of water that they expect to be required to ensure continuous water supplies over a period of 25 years. They must take into consideration the effects of population increase, climate change and lots of other factors. The plans outline the type of solutions the water companies propose to invest in and the timing of that investment to ensure they will be able to meet the demand for water from their customers. Similarly, drought plans set out the actions a water company will take in a dry weather event, to ensure that we all have sufficient water supplies.
