■ All boards: Coastal management
The south coast of England is highly developed and has large residential and tourism functions. Hard engineering has been used in a piecemeal fashion to prevent erosion since Victorian times. But with knock-on effects to adjacent coastal areas and climate change bringing increased storm occurrence and sea-level rise, costs of such schemes are set to soar. The Environment Agency now attempts to balance needs and develop sustainable economic models for future coastal protection.
