When I left school to study geography at university 35 years ago, I didn’t have a plan or a mental map of possible career paths. I just had a vague notion that any university degree would create options for me. I continued walking in the direction of geography because I was enjoying the subject as a late teen. With hindsight, I couldn’t have picked a better discipline to prepare me for the journey that followed.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years as a geography undergraduate, which opened my eyes to a much larger world and led me down paths I hadn’t even known were there. For that reason alone, geography was the best choice I could have ever made. I didn’t necessarily know that at the time though. I had no idea what to do with my degree when I completed it. I fancied myself as a TV producer at the BBC, but failed to get accepted into their graduate training programme.
