MAKING THE GRADE: GEOGRAPHICAL SKILLS

Questionnaires and interviews revisited

Part 1

This issue of GEOGRAPHY REVIEW offers an introduction to questionnaires, and a later article will focus on interviews and focus groups

Collecting information either from, or about, people is fundamental to many areas of geographical understanding. Questionnaires and interviews have undoubtedly been one of the most widely used data collection tools in human geography research. They provide a rapid and inexpensive way of discovering the characteristics, perceptions and beliefs of a group of people.

For A-level geographers, questionnaires and interviews remain popular approaches but their effectiveness can sometimes be less than originally imagined. Challenges of design and delivery can be at the root of many problems, although technology now means that this hurdle can be more easily overcome.
