British football’s place in the world

This Making Connections column explores the growth of local UK football teams into global brands — and the opportunities and challenges that arise when local and global forces meet

Through studying geography, we gain knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics. We also acquire important skills and capabilities — one of which is the ability to create links between ideas and concepts drawn from different curriculum topics. This article explores connections between Global Systems and Changing Places. Our focus is the ways in which global systems have impacted on local football sports leagues in the UK over time, and vice-versa. See Figure 1.

The UK’s football teams are an important aspect of identity for many places. Their histories are closely linked with the social, economic and environmental characteristics of urban areas where they were first founded. Even now, some team badges show traditional local industries (Table 1).
