The water balance

The water balance is part of the water cycle. It shows how availability of water in a drainage basin changes according to the season. In this column Claire Goulsbra looks at the inputs, outputs and processes that occur in river catchments, and how they interact to create this balance

The water balance tells us how water availability changes over time. It is the balance between inputs to the system from precipitation, and outputs from evapotranspiration (Figure 1). The balance between the two will determine changes in storage such as soil water, and also how much water passes through our rivers as discharge.
