When we say someone is ‘thinking like a geographer’, it could mean they’re good at making connections. In A-level geography and beyond, enquiry and explanation often require you to make links between ideas, concepts or processes drawn from a number of different fields. To take this idea further, many of the greatest challenges facing us today — ranging from climate change to governance of cyberspace—require an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving.
It is therefore important for you as a geographer to be able to ‘join the dots’ between different topics. Your A-level examinations will include tasks designed to find out if you can do this. They are called synoptic exam questions.
