Getting your sampling right

Sampling methods are critical in any type of research, including your NEA. Here David Holmes explains how to make your investigation robust by using the most appropriate sampling techniques

Exam-board feedback on geography nonexamined assessments (NEAs) suggests that there were can be problems with the reliability and robustness of the fieldwork design methods students have used. This is not surprising. It is difficult to plan and carry out sampling (including frequency and timing of data collection) in an effective way.

In order to ensure your results and conclusions are reliable, it is essential to collect the best data you can. But this is harder than it sounds, and all too often fieldwork data can be unreliable or even unrepresentative. Common problems are:
