Trade—the buying, selling and exchanging of goods and services—is a long-standing element of human societies. At the most basic level it allows us access to food and raw materials that are not available locally. With improved transportation in the twenty-first century, goods can be moved much more quickly, and even perishable items, such as fruit and cut flowers, can be traded across great distances.
