Overtourism

What is overtourism, how does it relate to globalisation, development and sustainability, and what does it mean for the geography of place?

Tourism generates and transfers income between societies. In some contexts it can, in addition, encourage positive social and cultural change. It also brings new pressures and injustices. The word ‘overtourism’ is now being used to describe the way excessive visitor growth has damaging effects for local (non-tourist) societies in some places. There are several warning signs:

■ Local communities are priced out of the property market where they live, or have less disposable income (due to high housing and living costs).
