making the grade: question and answer

Water and carbon cycles

This Question and Answer uses questions from Section B of the OCR A-level H481/01 Physical Systems exam paper (Earth’s Life Support Systems). It is focused on the water and carbon cycles. These topics are covered by other exam boards (see Box 1), but the exact question styles and mark tariffs may vary. The exam comments are the responsibility of GEOGRAPHY REVIEW and have neither been provided nor approved by the examination board

Questions 1 (a)–(d) are typical of the current A-level specifications. They move from low to high-mark tariffs (4, 3, 10, 16 marks) and from data-stimulus skills questions, through questions testing knowledge and understanding, to a question that tests evaluation skills.

These questions could be used as class or homework activities in preparation for exam boards other than OCR, bearing in mind specification requirements.
