Food security can be defined as a ‘condition that exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.’ This definition came out of the World Food Summit in 1996. It rests upon three conditions, known as the ‘pillars’ of food security:
