An ecosystem consists of a community of organisms and the physical environment it occupies. Most ecosystems have emerged over millennia, and the organisms within the community have found ways to cohabit, and to adjust to the physical processes and disturbances that shape their environment. This is why biological conservation is important: biotic communities rely on specific environmental conditions or processes (e.g. soil nutrients, flooding, fires) and if these are lost, the species that comprise the community may be too.
