Population change

A case study of Uganda

This article provides a case study of a country with a classic youthful population structure and rapid population growth: Uganda. What are the reasons behind this population structure, and the implications for the future of the country?

Kampala

In 2012 the government of Uganda announced that it had the youngest population in the world, with 78% of people under the age of 30, and 52% under 15.Uganda’s population is currently growing at just over 3% per year, making it the fifth fastest growing population in the world, behind fellow African countries Niger, Burundi,

Malawi and South Sudan. The fastest of these has a growth rate of just over 4%. Estimates suggest that Uganda’s population will rise from today’s 37 million to around 47 million by 2025, and be close to 100 million by 2050.
