Assessing population patterns

Providing adequate healthcare to a population means understanding patterns of need and patterns of access to healthcare resources such as GP surgeries. This article explains how accessibility can be researched and how GIS is a useful tool

If a health service is to succeed it is important to understand how accessible its resources, such as GP services and hospitals, are for the population. In the past, studies on the accessibility of health services attempted to assess flows in terms of physical access, in other words how easy or difficult it was for a person to travel to a health service. But it is also important to consider other types of accessibility:

■ financial accessibility (is the service expensive?)
