making the grade: question and answer

Understanding the Assessment Objectives

This Question and Answer is a little different. Rather than focusing on a specific past question from one examination board it sets out to help you understand the new Assessment Objectives for AS and A-level geography exams from 2017 onwards. It is difficult to pretend that Assessment Objectives (shortened to ‘AOs’) are exciting, but understanding them is essential to your overall success

The easiest way to understand AOs is to think of them as skills. In any test, you have to demonstrate different skills in order to pass, or achieve a particular score. The driving test, which many of you will be taking, consists of certain skills or ‘AOs’ (Table 1).

It’s not possible to pass the whole driving test by being an expert at only one of these skills. You must be able to demonstrate a certain level of competence in all of them. Your geography exams are exactly like this.
