making the grade: geographical skills

Fieldwork at AS

If you are taking AS geography this year you will be examined on the fieldwork you have carried out. Here David Holmes explains what to expect, and how to prepare

Figure 1 The route to enquiry or planning pathway for an AS fieldwork investigation

Geography fieldwork and research skills at A-level, for the specifications that started in September 2016, are tested by a 3,000–4,000 word piece of coursework. In the last Geographical Skills column I wrote about geographical enquiry as a means to get to grips with this individual investigation.

But at AS, the geography fieldwork assessment is very different. The exam consists of series of written questions, many in extended form (9–12 marks in some cases) that need to be tackled with confidence, accuracy and clarity. This column provides an introduction to AS fieldwork and its assessment at the end of Year 12.
