updates: climate change update

Understanding the 2015 Paris Agreement

Climate change is a key global issue for the twenty-first century. What was agreed at last year’s UN conference in Paris, and is it likely to succeed?

An ice clock created for the Paris conference

Late last year the United Nations (UN) organised a 2-week meeting of governments in France, known as COP21. The result was a 32-page document issued on 12 December 2015. This so-called Paris Agreement commits 195 countries to reducing their emissions of greenhouse gases so that the future average atmospheric temperature will not exceed 2ºC above preindustrial levels. World political leaders officially signed up to this agreement in April 2016.

Why is this commitment important? How will it be achieved in practice? And what are the chances of it being broken? In answering these questions, this update will help you understand what has been hailed as a ‘historic leap forward’ in the global management of our changing atmosphere.
