Tectonic hazards

This Question and Answer looks at an Edexcel AS question for the new specifications that will be examined for the first time in summer 2017. The question discussed here is from Edexcel AS Paper 1 (sample assessment materials) and is on the Tectonic Processes and Hazards topic. Like most AS questions, this question consists of a ‘ramped’ sequence of sub-questions, as shown in Figure 1. The level of demand (difficulty) increases as the question sequence progresses and the command words reflect this (see Box 1).

The new AS questions are not dramatically different from those of the 2008 specification but there are some differences you should be aware of:
