The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were eight international targets established following the United Nations (UN) Millennium Summit in 2000. The UN member states and a number of other international organisations committed to working towards these goals by 2015. Box 1 lists the eight goals.
The MDGs were seen as a powerful tool to focus world attention on development and inf luence resource transfers between nations. They made up the basic framework for the UN’s development activities. The aim was to address global issues such as poverty, health, gender inequality and justice.
