Water stewardship

Is the big business approach sustainable?

Freshwater resources are under pressure in many parts of the world. This article is a case study of the ways in which the food and drinks industry is working to improve its stewardship of water resources. The article questions how much the business approach really contributes to sustainability

Climate change, along with population growth and economic development, are putting growing pressure on freshwater resources. One of the issues this creates is a risk to businesses. Some large companies are concerned that they might face water shortages, increases in water prices and reductions in water quality which could impact their business.

One area of business in which water is a critical resource is the global food and drinks industry. Water is a primary ingredient for many products and it is used in processes such as cleaning, boiling, cooling, pasteurisation, fermentation, dilution, blanching, brining, to trigger germination and for the conditioning and transport of raw materials. At the same time water quality and waste-water treatment are also major issues for this industry.
