Education is a key component of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MDG 2 is ‘to achieve universal primary education’ and MDG 3 has as one of its targets ‘Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education.’ In both cases the deadline for achieving these goals is 2015. While progress has been made, significant disparities remain and have impacts on the lives of women and girls throughout the world.
MDG 2 recognises the importance of basic education for all children regardless of gender. But girls are more likely than boys to miss out on education. Gender equality in education is important for development for a number of reasons.
