In mid-winter, temperatures in Greenland fall as low as −64°C. Meltwater streams are frozen, and thick sea ice (frozen sea water) develops in the surrounding oceans. In the summer, the area surrounding the great Greenland ice sheet thaws to reveal a landscape teeming with life. But the climate in Greenland is changing. Over the last few decades average annual air temperature has increased by up to 4°C. Researchers are now faced with important questions:
■ How are the ice sheet and its surrounding glaciers responding to climate change?
