new horizons: the big picture

Istanbul

I stanbul is often described as the city where the ‘East’ meets the ‘West’. It is a transcontinental city straddling the Bosphorus Strait between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Historically, the city was important because of its strategic position along the Silk Road — atrade route between China and the West from earliest times.

In 2014, Istanbul was listed 28th in a ranking of ‘global cities’: the world’s biggest, most interconnected cities that help set global agendas and serve as the hubs of global integration. In economic terms, Istanbul remains significant because of its geographical location and this is likely to be further enhanced as the Turkish economy continues to grow (Turkey is one of the MINT countries).
