What has the internet ever done for us?

My first Online column, ‘Surfer’s paradise?’ was published in September 2000 (GEOGRAPHY REVIEW Vol. 14, No. 1). It represented a new commitment by GEOGRAPHY REVIEW to discussing resources on the internet. The world wide web, as it is more formally known, had by then been accessible for several years using the popular web browsers Netscape (1993) and Internet Explorer (1995). By the end of the 1990s it was obvious that the internet was going to play an important part in the communication of geographical information. Since then the impact on knowledge and communication has been even quicker and more profound than we anticipated.
