In order to be sustainable, rural development must take into account a balance of social, economic and environmental factors. The aim of most projects is economic growth without significant negative social and environmental impacts. Rural planning can involve controversial issues, particularly for local communities.
The term sustainable development was first used in the 1987 Brundtland Report It referred to development carried out for the benefit of present generations without compromising that of future generations. It is often described as having three elements which must be balanced: economy, environment and society.
