The UK experienced exceptional rainfall and its stormiest conditions for 40 years over the winter. Could climate change be responsible for recent adverse conditions? How are citizens and government agencies adapting?

■ In late 2013 a cluster of strong depressions was responsible for damaging winds across the UK. During the St Jude storm (28 October), 160 km h−1 winds killed five people, felled trees and toppled lorries. Subsequent storms brought further death and disruption, notably in the week before Christmas when five people died. Parts of southern England experienced the wettest conditions ever recorded.
