Hazard risk assessment

A case study from Brazil

Over the last three decades, the Brazilian city of Petrópolis has suffered repeated catastrophic landslides and floods. This article describes the authors’ risk-assessment project that has allowed them to predict and map the areas most vulnerable to landslides and suggest preventative measures. It will be of interest to all those studying natural hazards. Tim Burt’s article on pages 38–41 explains the basics of mass movements
