Information and communications technology (ICT) has transformed the way that businesses and people interact and has facilitated globalisation. But it also raises challenges for governments related to security, conflict and how much freedom they want their citizens to have. This article looks at the role of ICT in political issues and is relevant to topics on globalisation, development, conflict (AQA), power (Edexcel) and global interactions (IB)

ICT is a shorthand expression for all the information-processing and communications technologies whose influence has grown so remarkably since the 1970s. Recent waves of hardware and software innovation have transformed how people, businesses and states interact with one another in cyberspace. This article focuses on the governance of such interactions between different players.

Developments in ICT, such as the internet and mobile devices, have played a big part in globalisation. But as well as social and economic opportunities, new technology brings challenges.
