In 2013, the G8 conference of world leaders was hosted and chaired by the UK government at Lough Erne, Northern Ireland. This was an opportunity for aid agencies to influence the decision-making of world leaders. The agencies launched a major campaign — the IF campaign — to put pressure on politicians to agree policies tackling global food issues (Box 1).

This Development Update considers the impact of such large, collaborative campaigns. How effective are they in achieving positive change in the developing world?
