Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) were once popular with geographers. In 1998 a Practical Geography in this magazine showed how this tool could be used in geography fieldwork. EIAs are still used widely in industry, but less so in fieldwork. This Practical Geography re-visits the idea of EIAs, but links them to landscape value, which is important in planning. You will have come across the idea of value when studying ecosystem services, sustainable development and environmental protection, as well as land-use decision-making.
