Every year there are 100 earthquakes around the world that are strong enough to cause damage, and probably 500,000 of lesser magnitude. Since the year 2000 there have been about 0.5 million deaths and many injuries as a result of earthquakes. This is mainly due to seismic shaking that causes buildings to collapse and triggers landslides. But there are also lesser-known consequences such as:
■ disruption of aquifers, cutting people off from their drinking and irrigation water
