The former West German chancellor, Willy Brandt, chaired an international commission in 1980 that analysed the international development issues of the time. The Brandt Report published by this group suggested a number of measures to reduce the growing economic disparity between the rich ‘North’ and the poor ‘South’, most of which were never implemented.
Among geographers the report reinforced the idea of less economically developed countries (LEDCs) — the ‘South’ — and more economically developed countries (MEDCs) — the ‘North’ — and led to stereotyping.
