I must start with a confession. I am writing this article on a train to London, drinking from a bottle of water sourced from a northern spa town as I do so. I try not to use bottled water but sometimes, needs must.
As consumption of bottled water continues to rise, there is growing unease about its use. This includes concerns about waste going to landfill and excessive pumping of groundwater. A key question is how much energy is required to produce and deliver bottled water compared to mains supply. In the USA, bottled water consumption now exceeds that of beer and milk and only carbonated soft drinks (regular plus diet) have larger sales by volume.
