What’s the point of a fieldwork notebook?

Notes taken in the field are an important part of your fieldwork

Fieldwork is all about collecting information. A field notebook is a vital tool for recording information so that it can be used as a part of a portfolio of evidence. Geographers and scientists working professionally in the field often use such notebooks and these may be considered property of an employer, to be handed in at the end of a field study or expedition.

Amateurs also keep personal field notebooks. A birdwatcher or ornithologist, for example, may keep a record of bird sightings which includes information about locations, habitat, weather, conditions of bird(s), etc. Someone else reading this record should be able to get a complete picture of what happened on any given expedition.
