All around the world, supplies of underground water are running out. Usually, the main culprit is crop irrigation but inevitably this impacts on people too, as drinking water becomes scarce.
Sustainable groundwater means making sure there are continuing supplies for future generations. By definition, overpumping of groundwater is unsustainable. If output (water pumped out) exceeds input (water entering the system), the amount stored will reduce, just like your bank balance if you spend more than you earn.
