Practical Geography has looked at the importance of photography in fieldwork on a number of occasions in past volumes. Taking your own photographs is an easy way of collecting primary data for a geographical enquiry and has the advantage of being something that you, rather than a teacher or field-centre member of staff, are in control of. Photographs should be far more than space-fillers: they provide vital evidence about the fieldwork experience, record landscapes and human environments and can also be used to question and challenge accepted models, views and beliefs.
