Resilience

In this new regular column Simon Oakes looks at the meaning of terms that everyone seems to be using. What do they really mean?

Studies of resilience are well-suited to A-level and diploma fieldwork or research projects.

A case study of ecosystem secondary succession (on cleared land, or in an area that has suffered slope failure) could examine evidence for resilience by investigating the time taken for a previous equilibrium state to be restored. Measurements could be made of numbers of indicator species and biodiversity levels.
