question and answer
Synoptic skills are an important, but challenging, aspect of A2 geography. All specifications have a synoptic element, although they each approach it in slightly different ways. This Question and Answer is divided into two parts. The first part considers what is meant by synopticity and the different ways you can demonstrate synoptic skills in examinations.
The second part looks at the issues analysis exercise in the Edexcel A2 Global Challenges Section B examination from June 2010. The question is printed in bold type and the students’ answers are in italics. The examiner’s comments are the responsibility of GEOGRAPHY REVIEW and have neither been provided nor approved by the examination board. Cameron Dunn writes here in a personal capacity.
