Fieldwork measuring discharge in rivers and streams is popular at AS and A2. Bankfull refers to the flow of a river when it is just contained within the channel and banks. Once bankfull is exceeded, a river is in flood and water will spill over on to the floodplain. Bankfull discharges in river channels are important because:

■ they have an impact on river processes (moving sediment, erosion etc.)
