You may have used digital video (DV) to make a short film to upload to YouTube, to record family and friends, or to document an activity or outing. DV is commonplace and many of you reading this will have a phone, digital camera or stand-alone device you can use to make short videos.
So why would you want to use it in geographical fieldwork? In many instances, DV is better than still photography for recording the activities of people and for documenting landscapes. A lot more information can be collected in a few seconds of moving images than in several still images. Inset 1 outlines some of the more specific advantages of DV.
