In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, the Democratic Republic of Congo offered the Haitian government £1.5 million in humanitarian aid, despite itself being one of the poorest countries in the world. Senegal, another African country, offered land for displaced black Haitians to ‘return’ to their continental homeland.
Such assistance from poor donors is far from unusual, and has even been directed at the world’s richest countries. After Hurricane Katrina hit the southern USA in 2005, Sri Lanka offered aid to America. Although a small sum of money, it was a powerful symbolic moment for many Sri Lankans — they too could demonstrate their compassion for victims, and within their capacities, be generous.
